Sturgeon County council has voted to withdraw from Edmonton Global, a foreign investment attraction agency funded by municipalities throughout the Edmonton region.
The county's vote follows Strathcona County's vote to withdraw from Edmonton Global last month.
A Dec. 13 Sturgeon County news release says the county has contributed about $600,000 to Edmonton Global since its founding in 2017.
Edmonton Global's policies dictate that a municipality must provide two years notice to withdraw, meaning the county will still technically be a part of, and make financial contributions to, the agency until the end of 2025.
“We recognize that regional business attraction and development takes years to achieve and have invested in Edmonton Global since 2017,” Sturgeon County Mayor Alanna Hnatiw is quoted in the release.
The Gazette was not able to immediately determine what the council's vote was and whether any councillors were opposed.
More to come.
