Division 6 residents will head to the polls once again this winter to replace Ronald Shaw after his sudden resignation from Sturgeon County council.

Sturgeon County councillors were sworn in Oct. 26 during their first meeting after the Oct. 18 municipal election.

Absent was Division 6 councillor-elect Ronald Shaw, who had submitted his resignation on Oct. 25 for unspecified personal reasons.

Shaw could not be reached for comment by press deadline.

The resignation means the county will have to hold a byelection, the date of which is to be set at a special council meeting at 8 a.m. Oct. 28, said Jesse Sopko, the county’s director of corporate services.

Sopko said this byelection will be very similar to the general election just held, except it will be restricted to Division 6 residents only. Nomination day will be four weeks prior to the date of the byelection. Council will appoint a returning officer and decide on a time and place for polls and advance polls on Oct. 28.

Council has appointed councillors Neal Comeau and Dan Derouin to oversee Division 6 residents prior to the byelection, county spokesperson Lucas Warren said in a media release.

Residents who live north of Heartland Drive (Township Road 570) should call Comeau, while those south of that road should contact Derouin.

Questions on the byelection should go to Sopko at 780-939-8377.
