Storage locker raid uncovers $30K in stolen property

Local RCMP officers uncovered $30,000 worth of stolen property in a St. Albert storage locker this week.

Local RCMP officers uncovered $30,000 worth of stolen property in a St. Albert storage locker this week.

After obtaining a search warrant, the detachment’s Crime Reduction Unit opened up the storage unit in the Campbell Business Park and found a huge collection of stolen property.

Officers showed off the seizure at the detachment Wednesday and it included dozens of power tools such as drills and several heavy-duty power saws.

There were also several sets of golf clubs, hockey equipment, furniture, pellet guns, antique swords and several hand tools like axes and sledge hammers.

Const. Janice Schoepp said the police unit that uncovered the material expects to lay charges.

“There haven’t been any charges laid at this point, but they are anticipating laying charges or a charge.”

A public tip allowed police to investigate the storage locker and obtain a warrant.

Since discovering the hoard, officers have managed to return some of the property to the rightful owners. In many instances the property was initially stolen from areas outside St. Albert.

Schoepp said police plan to contact RCMP in other communities in the hopes of finding even more property owners.

“We are going to contact the detachments in surrounding communities where we think the items might have been stolen from and ask them to check their files

Schoepp also recommended that anyone in the region who has had similar property stolen should contact the St. Albert RCMP.

“If anyone has had their property stolen they should contact the detachment and they can come down.”

The incident also makes a strong case for writing down serial numbers of tools and other property and if possible, marking it in some way, she added.
