Stay safe as clocks spring forward: St. Albert RCMP remind of Daylight Saving Time

With Daylight Saving Time upon us, the St. Albert RCMP are offering "important safety considerations" as the clocks spring forward on March 9.

With Daylight Saving Time upon us, the St. Albert RCMP are offering "important safety considerations" as the clocks spring forward on March 9.

Police say the time change can affect visibility on the roads, home security and overall awareness. As such, they are offering these spring safety tips:

  • Use the time change as a reminder to check that your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are functioning properly and replace batteries if needed. These devices play a critical role in home safety.
  • With sunrise and sunset occuring at different times, visibility on the roads will be affected. Drivers should be extra cautious, particularly during the first week of the time change.
  • Changing daylight hours can make it more difficult to see pedestrians and cyclists, especially in the early morning and late afternoon. Drivers should remain alert, and pedestrians should ensure they are visible to traffic.
  • As daylight hours increase and outdoor activities become more frequent, remember to lock your doors and windows when leaving your home, as well as securing your vehicle even when it is parked in your driveway or garage.
  • Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to police. Your awareness and cooperation contribute to a safer community for everyone.
