Message from the chair

There are several things business owners must do to keep their business healthy, but none more important than participating in the Healthy Business Challenge. New kings were crowned Saturday night at the gala, kicking off a whole new year of opportunity to get involved in the fastest growing sport in St. Albert. Winning first place overall for 2009 was the City of St. Albert, with the Fraternal Order of Eagles taking second spot and Connect Logistics and Sturgeon Valley Athletic Club tied for third.

Participating in these fun events is an excellent team building opportunity as well as a great way to network. It gives recognition to your business in the community and shows that you appreciate your dedicated staff. And did I mention how much fun it is? Fifty points are awarded to any member business represented at an event with an additional 30, 20 and 10 points available for first, second and third. As you can see participation is the important part of the challenge and as such, we are continuing to add events that will give everyone a chance to get involved. Curling is the first event, being held on March 6, followed by bowling, slow pitch, golf, a blood donor drive, the Mayors' Walk, pool and darts for 2010. These disciplines are geared to have participants involved throughout the entire event at an affordable price. All events are expected to sell out this year so watch for the notices and get your entries into the chamber office early. See you at the curling rink March 6!

Mike Howes sworn in as chair

On Saturday Jan. 30, Chamber first vice chair, Charlene Zoltenko from State Farm Insurance and chamber chair Mike Howes from DKC Sparklean were officially sworn into office by Mayor Nolan Crouse at the Genstar Chamber Gala. Amidst the elegant surroundings of the Glendale Golf & Country Club, guests enjoyed an exceptional meal, great music, the presentation of the 2009 Healthy Business Challenge trophies and an amazing magic show by Sheldon Casavant. Local artist Lewis Lavoie created an original artwork during the evening, which was auctioned off with proceeds donated to the St. Albert Chamber of Commerce Building Fund. Outgoing chair Joe Becigneul delivered his Year in Review speech and Howes shared his vision for 2010. The signature sponsor again this year was Genstar Developments, with wine sponsored by the Campbell Park Liquor Store. Many thanks to our supporting sponsors and to everyone involved in this outstanding event.
