St. Albert will have three players representing them at the 2024 baseball Canada Cup.
Dayne Liske, who played for the 18U BAEL St. Albert Cardinals, will be pitching and playing second base. Miguel Tetreault, who is apart of the St. Albert AHP Baseball Academy, will be playing third base, and shortstop. Dominick Morgan, who is also apart of the St. Albert AHP Baseball Academy, will be playing catcher for Team Alberta.
The players went through a two step tryout process. The first aspect of the tryouts was a hitting and fielding test in front of the Team Alberta coaches. If the players did well enough in the first stage, they would be invited to the second stage of the tryouts.
The second stage was a baseball game. If you were from southern Alberta you would play in the south game, and if you were from northern Alberta you would play in the north game. From there the coaching staff had to create a team of 20 players. The tryout was an experience Miguel Tetreault will never forget.
"I thought it was really cool seeing all the top baseball athletes playing together" said Tetreault. "That's when I realized that this is what I want to do, be able to represent Team Alberta."
For Dominick Morgan, who played on team Alberta last year, the focus was different. Having already been through the tryout process, Morgan chose to focus on his love for the game.
"Baseball for me is an escape, where I can just be myself" explained Morgan. "I never have to worry about the outside stresses of the world. It's just me and an amazing game."
Team Alberta will be looking to improve on the disappointing seventh place they finished in last years Canada Cup. However, with a team comprised of a lot of new players, last year isn't on their minds. Dayne Liske believes his team can compete with the best in Canada.
"I think the team will compete at the Canada Cup" stated Liske. "We have so many talented guys on the team. I think we will compete with the best."
The Canada Cup will take place in Fort McMurray from Aug. 7 to Aug. 11, with an opening ceremony on August 6. Team Alberta's first game will be on Aug. 7, at 7:00 p.m. against Manitoba. For more information on the Canada Cup and Team Alberta's schedule you can go to Canada Cup Schedule.
