Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the St. Albert area, including Edmonton and Sherwood Park, warning that conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms on Wednesday afternoon.

The alert, issued at 12:20 p.m. on June 18, states that slow-moving thunderstorms are expected to develop and could bring strong wind gusts, large hail, and heavy rain.

Funnel clouds are also possible in parts of northwest Alberta, the agency said.

Environment Canada cautions that driving conditions may become difficult, and reminds the public not to drive through flooded roadways. Lightning remains a hazard during storms and can cause injuries or fatalities.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that may produce damaging hail, wind or rain.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updates and forecasts from Environment Canada. Reports of severe weather can be submitted by emailing [email protected], calling 1-800-239-0484, or posting on X (formerly Twitter) using the hashtag #ABStorm.
