The City of St. Albert will activate its extreme weather response starting Wednesday, Jan. 10, as frigid temperatures hit the Edmonton region over the next few days.

Residents needing to get out of the cold are encouraged to head to the closest city facility, such as Servus Place, St. Albert Place, Beaudry Place, the Jensen Lakes Library, and the Nakî Transit Centre.

The city's extreme weather response also involves allowing those outside to use St. Albert Transit at no cost to go to the nearest city facility along the bus route.

“Individuals will be bused at no cost to any location along the bus route that is near a warming facility within St. Albert or an emergency and overnight shelter in St. Albert or Edmonton,” the city's website reads.

“Members of our community, including those who are vulnerably unhoused, are most at risk. Keep your eyes open for people who may be struggling with the frigid temperatures.”

The city plans to keep the extreme weather response in place until Jan. 15, when the daytime temperature is forecasted to be -15 C.

Starting Wednesday, St. Albert isn't expected to see temperatures be above -20 C until Jan. 15, with the temperature expected to be as cold as -39 C overnight Saturday, according to the Weather Network's seven-day forecast.
