Citing an increase in break and enters in local businesses and residential properties, St. Albert RCMP are offering a list of tips and tools to prevent property crime.

RCMP suggest businesses install motion sensor lights, video cameras, an alarm system, and roll shutters or bars on windows, if they haven't done so already.

As well, RCMP say businesses should keep valuables away from windows, remove all cash from registers after closing, and keep windows clear of stickers and posters.

For home owners, RCMP also suggest installing alarm systems and security cameras, and to not leave valuables outside when not being used.

“Lock the front door even when you are inside or outside in the back yard, ask a neighbour to take care of the of your property and take in papers if you plan to be away, (and) use indoor light timers in the evening when you are not home,” Mounties said in a Feb. 27 release.

“Turn on outside lights in the evening and install motion sensor lights, clear snow and trim trees (and) bushes around the home (to have) clear sight lines, (and) engrave and/or record identifying marks/numbers/serial numbers on bikes, tools, electronics and other valuable items.”

“Everyone has a role to play in keeping our community safe. If you see something or feel something is suspicious, do not assume someone else has reported it, write it down and call the police.”
