Step Into Alberta’s Historic Past

Have you been looking for a family-friendly adventure that is packed with history and completely free? Allow us to introduce you to a hidden gem right in your backyard—or just a short drive from it. St. Albert’s Historic River Lots and Grain Elevators.

We invite you to step back in time and experience the stories that shaped our community and province. Operated by the Arts and Heritage Foundation of St. Albert, these heritage sites are more than just places to visit; they’re a gateway to Alberta's Métis, Francophone, and agricultural history.

With our season officially open and running until September, we’re thrilled to welcome families, seniors, and history enthusiasts from St. Albert and beyond. Whether you’re a local resident or coming from the wider Capital Region, we promise an experience worth your time.

Here’s why you should add us to your list of must-visit destinations this summer:

Discover Alberta's Métis and Francophone Roots

St. Albert’s Historic River Lots tell the story of the Métis and French-speaking settlers who first established our community. The River Lots, with their unique strip design, were a defining feature of these early settlements. Wander through the beautifully preserved buildings and learn about these pioneers and how their influence continues to shape St. Albert today.

Our knowledgeable interpreters will guide you through fascinating historic buildings that highlight daily life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. You’ll leave with a deeper appreciation not only of the past but also of the cultural mosaic that defines Alberta.

Explore the Grain Elevators That Sustained a Province

When it comes to Alberta’s history, grain might not sound exciting at first glance—but its impact on our province’s development cannot be overstated. At the entrance to our heritage site, the towering grain elevators stand as monuments to the once-thriving agricultural hub of St. Albert.

Step inside these beautifully restored buildings and uncover the vital role they played in grain transportation and trade during Alberta's early boom years. From hands-on exhibits to detailed stories of crops flowing across railways, you’ll gain a surprising appreciation for the grain industry.

Father Lacombe Chapel

Located on nearby Mission Hill and operated by us on behalf of the Government of Alberta, the chapel is a stunning landmark that further highlights St. Albert’s spiritual and cultural roots. It is currently the oldest standing building in the province! Our interpreters will be there to guide you through its rich history.

And more!

There is so much to explore and interact with on site. Parents will love seeing their kids learn about Alberta’s history while engaging in fun activities. Teens might find the hands-on exploration surprisingly cool (yes, we said it), and seniors will feel a nostalgic connection to earlier times, making it a perfect outing for all generations.

Plus, our site is easily accessible off Anthony Henday Drive, making it a breeze to visit from anywhere in the Capital Region.
