St. Albert RCMP says they issued four speeding tickets over the August long weekend after motorists in two separate incidents were captured going nearly double the posted speed limit.

The two incidents took place just minutes apart.

Three black sports cars were spotted driving very tight with each other and aggressively while they entered Villeneuve Road from the Jensen Lakes area, on Monday Aug. 7 just after 9 p.m. reads an Aug. 8 RCMP release.

"They accelerated at an alarming rate and were captured at speeds up to 119 km/h in the posted 60 km/h zone on Villeneuve Road, while maintaining mere inches between them.”

The release says all three vehicles were being driven by 18-year-old males, all of whom passed alcohol screening tests. The drivers were residents of Edmonton and St. Albert, RCMP said.

“Moments later the same officer observed a Yamaha sport bike on Giroux Road accelerate up to 104 km/h in the posted 60 km/h maximum zone after leaving a stop light,” the release continues.

“The 29-year-old male motorcyclist, a resident of St. Albert, also passed the mandatory alcohol screening and received a violation ticket for exceeding the posted speed limit.”

Cpl. Curtis Harsulla with the St. Albert RCMP says in the release that other than these two incidents, overall long-weekend driving was thought to be “safe and reasonable.”
