A St. Albert man was killed Saturday when the black pickup truck he was driving collided with the entrance sign for a Sturgeon Valley subdivision.

Police continue to investigate the crash that happened Saturday afternoon at the entranceway to the Greystone Manor subdivision.

The man, 26-year-old Michael Westover, died at the scene of the crash.

Police are unsure what caused the vehicle to leave the road, but after hopping the curb it collided head-on with the heavy brick and metal sign.

Police have little information about what caused the accident, but Staff Sgt. Mac Richards with the Morinville RCMP said officers have only managed to rule out road conditions and weather at this point in the investigation.

Several passersby stopped at the scene of the accident to offer aid on Saturday around 4:30 p.m. Emergency crews from St. Albert and Sturgeon County also responded.

Westover’s sister Rachelle said her brother was an accomplished young man, having graduated from Paul Kane High School in 2002 before obtaining a science degree from Queen’s University.

He had attended several years of medical school in Ireland before coming home to Canada because he was worried about his ability to work overseas. He was working for a medical supply company at the time of his death.

He was also set to marry his fiancée Keisha St. Arnaud, with whom he had been together for many years.

Rachelle said her brother had an engaging personality and was full of life.

“He was quite a character and people really liked him.”

Rachelle said her brother was a big hockey fan and played in several adult leagues. He was also a loyal Oilers supporter.

The force of the collision was evident on Monday, as the large entrance sign had completely toppled. The large brick column had crumbled and the sign was badly damaged.

Police tape encircled the entire sign and several flags that had been in the ground had been pulled out by the force of the crash.

A service is being held on Friday at 11 a.m. at the St. Albert Alliance Church. Anyone who knew Westover is invited to attend.
