St. Albert has a younger population than Canadian average

Census data released today reveals that St. Albert has more children than seniors.

The age, sex and dwelling numbers released by Statistics Canada today is the second round of numbers released from last year’s data collection.

St. Albert has a slightly older population than Alberta and Edmonton, but still younger than the national average. The national statistics show for the first time in history there are more Canadians over 65 than under 14.

The city is home to 12,210 children between the ages of 0 to14, which makes up 18.6 per cent of the population. Seniors, who are aged 65 and older, make up 15.3 per cent of the population with 10,065 residents.

The working population in the city, who are people aged 15 to 64, make up 66 per cent of the population.

Last year the city was home to 10 people who were 100 and older years old and all 10 of them were women. The average age of residents is 39.9.

The city of 65,590 has more women than men, clocking in at 33,570 and 32,020 respectively.

Edmonton has a slightly younger population with an average age of 37.8. The city has 12.3 per cent of the population made up of people over the age of 65 and 18.4 per cent of residents are under the age of 14.

The working population, from ages 15-64 make up 69.3 per cent of the overall inhabitants.

Overall Alberta has the youngest population in Canada with 19.2 per cent of the population falling between the ages of 0 and 14. The provincial rate for seniors over the age of 65 measures up at 12.3 per cent and the working population between the ages of 15 and 64 accounts for 68.5 per cent of residents.

The average age of Canadians is 41.

The average household size in St. Albert is 2.7 people who live in 23, 955 dwellings overall. The majority of the residences are detached homes with 17,535 in the city.

The next round of data from the 2016 census will be released on July 2 and will focus on families, households, marital status and language.
