Facing competition from more than 1,000 entries from across the U.S. and Canada, the St. Albert Gazette has captured six Local Media Association awards.
“Our newsroom is very dynamic and talented,” publisher Brian Bachynski said. “Each individual plays a key role, informing and entertaining our readers each and every issue. A good showing like this, competing with our peers in North America, is a testament to the Gazette’s first-rate journalists.”
The twice-a-week paper was recognized multiple times for its high quality photography. Photographer Bryan Young placed first in the Best Sports Photo category for a photo he took at last year’s Bullarama. He also seized another first place award in Best Photojournalism along with colleague Chris Colbourne and former Gazette photographer April Bartlett and for their combined work on slain RCMP Const. David Wynn’s funeral last year. Bartlett picked up a second place award in the Best Feature Photo section for her photo Remembering Caelin, a photo of a dog lying next to a photo of its owner who committed suicide. An honourable mention was also awarded to the Gazette for its ‘Rodeo Madness’ photos.
Reporter Kevin Ma snagged an honourable mention in Best Environmental Story for The big green machine, a story about a former St. Albert resident helping to shrink waste volumes using the process of pyrolysis.
The Gazette also picked up an honourable mention in Class C of the 2015 Newspaper of the Year contest.
