A four-person crew of St. Albert firefighters is headed to Fort McMurray to provide aid as the fire rages.

The four-person crew and a Quint fire apparatus left St. Albert at about 7:40 p.m., less than 30 minutes after the request came from the Provincial Operations Centre to send the help at 7:15 p.m., according to an email from fire chief Ray Richards provided by councillors.

The unit will join with other crews from Edmonton and Strathcona County on the road to Fort McMurray.

Additional resources could be requested from St. Albert and preparations are being made to go if that request comes, said the email.

The wildfire situation escalated quickly this afternoon, eventually leading to an evacuation order that's said to be the largest fire evacuation in Alberta history. All of Fort McMurray was under an evacuation order on Tuesday night.
