A warning for those with sensitivities — fine particulates in the air are on the rise in St. Albert this afternoon and overnight.

IQAir shows the air quality index at 116, a level that can cause issues for groups with health concerns triggered by poor air quality. The air quality will remain at moderate throughout the weekend and is expected to improve to good by Monday, with an air quality index of 15.

Similarly, Environment Canada has placed the air quality index at moderate risk in St. Albert until tomorrow morning at 2 a.m. when it will drop back down to a low risk.

Those with health concerns can wear a mask when outdoors, use air purifiers, avoid outdoor activity and keep their windows closed during times of poor air quality, IQAir advises.

According to the Alberta Environment Ministry fine particulate matter in the air can cause health problems, such as lung and heart disease.

The smoke is rolling in from northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories.
