New contract for Protestant school superintendent
The Protestant school board has reappointed superintendent Barry Wowk and granted him another five-year contract.
The board Wednesday voted unanimously to grant the extension.
Wowk brings a long list of qualities to the job he’s held since 2005, said board chair Morag Pansegrau. She described Wowk as caring, fiscally responsible, innovative, dedicated to public education and continually abreast of the latest literature in education.
“He’s just an excellent superintendent who is highly respected both with our staff and within the province,” she said.
Wowk came to the district as deputy superintendent in 2000 from the Wainwright-based Buffalo Trail school district.
Teacher recognized for dedication
The Protestant school board awarded art teacher Andrea Daly with a certificate of recognition for extraordinary service.
Daly, 38, is the art teacher at Leo Nickerson Elementary School and is the creator of the school’s annual heritage fair.
Daly is an acknowledged innovator in teaching history and art who often presents at education conferences. She created a DVD entitled How To Run a Canadian Heritage Fair, which she shares with teachers across the province.
Daly called the recognition a significant honour.
“There’s so many worthy teachers in our district that do amazing things every day. To be chosen to receive this is a huge honour,” she said.
She said her job is different every day and is all about being creative with her students.
“I love my job and I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” Daly said. “I get to dig in and get dirty and have fun with the kids.”
The board created the certificate of recognition in 1997 as a way to reward employees whose efforts go above and beyond their job descriptions and who have an influence throughout the district and beyond, said spokesperson Paula Power. A handful of employees are recognized each year.
Daly recently received the Baha’i International Women’s Day Award. She’s also been previously nominated for the Governor General’s Award in Teaching Canadian History and the provincial Excellence in Teaching awards.
