Two students were sent to hospital Monday night following a school bus collision northwest of Legal.

The students were on their way home from Ă©cole Citadelle in Legal when the half-sized bus in which they were travelling was hit broadside by a pickup truck.

An RCMP collision analyst was immediately called to the scene. Officers now believe the bus went through a yield sign while headed west on Township Road 582 and collided with the truck, which was travelling southbound on Range Road 252.

The bus ended up about 50 metres from the intersection in the ditch, but stayed upright. Only minor damage to the back of the vehicle was visible.

The pickup truck was badly damaged with the front end completely crushed in by the force of the crash.

The male 70-year-old driver of the school bus has since been issued a $402 ticket for careless driving. His name has not been released.

Two students on the bus were hurt in the crash and both were taken to the University of Alberta Hospital — one by STARS Air Ambulance and the other by ground ambulance.

As of late Monday night both students were in stable condition and their injuries were being described as non-life threatening.

There were a total of six students on the bus, according to Henri Lemire, the superintendent of the Greater North Central Francophone school board.

He said the four uninjured students were all taken home by their parents, after EMS workers asked them to come to the scene.
