It’s the time of year for Lighting the Way. The St. Albert Sturgeon Hospice Association (SASHA) brings back one of its major fundraisers to give light and cheer at a dark time of year. Lighting the Way is designed to lift spirits for patients receiving end-of-life care at Foyer Lacombe.
Foyer Lacombe is located on Mission Hill along with St. Albert Catholic Parish. In the summer, the building overlooks a scenic view of grass and trees. But in the winter, the landscape is dark and dreary.
This is the third year SASHA has raised funds to decorate both spruce and deciduous trees in the immediate surrounding area with thousands upon thousands of coloured lights.
“We want to help bring the holiday spirit and joy to residents and families at Foyer Lacombe,” said newly appointed executive director Marcie Mazurenko. “We want to bring happiness to people not able to experience Christmas at home.”
SASHA supports numerous initiatives such as a compassionate care program whereby volunteers offer respite to caregivers. Hospice teas are enjoyed with residents every two weeks, and compassion bags are given to individuals nearing end-of-life. SASHA also offers Connect Café’s seminars hosting different speakers free of charge to the public.
“We try to support everyone who is dying, with dignity.”
So far, several local businesses have stepped up to help decorate 20 massive spruce trees visible from St. Albert Trail. Foyer Lacombe’s grounds will showcase another 17 sparkling outdoor trees
“We will have a variety of different trees. Smaller trees, bigger trees. But despite their size, they will all make a signature impact on our viewing pleasure."
Lighting the Way flips the switch Thursday, Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. Lights will continue shining for everyone’s viewing pleasure until Jan. 19, 2023.
For a $1,000 donation, a complete spruce tree is decorated. A donation of $800 covers a deciduous tree and $500 lights a half tree. Individuals can also donate $10 for a bulb.
