Rotary takes swing at charity efforts

How often do you get the chance to golf and call it a humanitarian effort? One of this city’s major service clubs has the answer with their second annual golf classic taking place next Thursday.

How often do you get the chance to golf and call it a humanitarian effort? One of this city’s major service clubs has the answer with their second annual golf classic taking place next Thursday.

The Saint City Rotary Club-sponsored event takes place next week. The tournament is one of two primary fundraisers the club holds each year. The group’s aim is to support efforts that benefit not just the community here but also across the region and even internationally, including Rotary Centennial Park, highway cleanups, Families at the Dump and Canadian Aid for Fire Services Abroad, among others.

For this tournament the two main benefitting groups are the St. Albert Youth Community Centre and the Canadian Association of Medical Teams Abroad (CAMTA). The latter sees medical teams dispatched to Ecuador to perform orthopaedic surgeries on low-income locals.

“[We chose] the youth centre because the youth are the future of St. Albert and CAMTA because of the amount of people that they help in Ecuador,” said Rotarian Linda Perras.

Perras said fundraisers like the golf classic are about making the most out of money that is raised. Golfers should expect to experience a bit of what it’s like for those two groups as well. The Happy Gilmore hole must be played with a hockey stick and the CAMTA hole is shot while standing on one leg, she said.

“It’s a lot of fun and everybody usually has a good time.”

The charity golf classic still has spots for about 20 more golfers so the deadline for registration has been extended until Friday. The organization is also hoping to garner a few more major sponsors and would love to hear from more conscientious St. Albertans who want to make real change in the world.
