RCMP say they've seen a substantial increase in the number of vehicles with expired registration.

The St. Albert RCMP are reminding motorists to check and re-new their vehicle registration.

Since the elimination of licence plate validation stickers and letters that used to be sent out by Alberta Registration, the police say that they've seen a substantial increase in the number of vehicles driven with expired registration and licence plates, the RCMP said in a news release.

They remind drivers that there's no grace period provided for vehicle registration renewal in Alberta, and that your vehicle is considered to have invalid registration once yours expires. This opens driver's vulnerable to fines such as:

  • Operating a motor vehicle without valid registration - Section 52(1)(a) Traffic Safety Act - fine $324
  • Operate a motor vehicle with an expired license plate - Section 53(1)(c) Traffic Safety Act - fine $324

They said that along with the violation ticket, driver's vehicles can be towed by police. The onus is on the driver of the vehicle to ensure their registration is valid.

You can check the status of your vehicle registration in person at any Alberta Registries Office or by going online to Alberta's Online Registry Service at e-registry.ca. The online Alberta Registry Service also allows motorists to sign up for "Vehicle Registration Renewal Reminders."
