Inspecting your snowmobile for mechanical issues and bringing a fully charged phone, first aid kit, and spare parts can help keep your ride safe.

The RCMP remind riders that snowmobiling in the St. Albert city limits is prohibited in accordance with Section 15 of St. Albert's Traffic Bylaw.

With the winter season in full flight, snowmobiling is a great way to explore the outdoors. While snowmobiling is prohibited within St. Albert city limits, including the Sturgeon River, there are other great spots outside of the city.

The RCMP offers the following tips to ensure that your ride is safe, fun, and incident free. They say it would be wise to consider taking a snowmobile safety course to learn proper handling and emergency response techniques. Other tips include:

  • Inspect your snowmobile before your outing for mechanical issues, including brakes, lights, fuel levels, and engine performance.
  • Bring along a fully charged phone, first aid kit, tool kit, flashlight, extra fuel, and spare parts such as belts and spark plugs.
  • Wear warm, layered clothing, insulated gloves, windproof jacket, snow pants and a properly fitted helmet designed for snowmobiling.
  • Familiarize yourself with the trails and terrain before you head out. Use official maps and always remember to stay on marked and groomed trails to avoid hazards.

They also advise you to check the weather forecasts in advance of your trip, and to avoid snowmobiling during extreme cold, snowstorms, or low visibility. If you're in mountainous areas, check avalanche forecasts and avoid high-risk zones. And always check ice thickness before crossing frozen water. Ensure that the ice is at least 25 cm (10 in) thick for snowmobiles and avoid areas with flowing water or cracks.

They also caution you to never ride alone; travelling with a group ensures help is available in case of an emergency, and to always let someone know your route and expected return time.
