The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) issued a bulletin on June 29 and said strike notice would not be issued that night. Since they have to give at least 72 hours notice, that means no strike can take place before July 4.

At press time, there was no word from Canada Post if there would be a lockout beginning July 2.

Deadlines to ship mail to ensure delivery prior to a potential work disruption have passed.

"In the event of a labour disruption, Canada Post will not operate," said a public advisory issued by Canada Post on June 27.

A Wednesday news release from CUPW said a request sent to the Canada Post CEO to extend the July 2 deadline for a lockout by two weeks had been rejected.

Gazette plans

The St. Albert Gazette will still be available in the event of a mail disruption.

St. Albert, Morinville and Cardiff deliveries will not be impacted, as those areas receive door to door delivery by the Gazette's carriers.

However, about 4,300 copies of the weekly Wednesday edition are sent through Canada Post to cover parts of Sturgeon County. In the event of a disruption, newspaper boxes will be placed at strategic locations. The map will be available in ads and on the Gazette website.

There is a small number of national subscribers who won't be able to receive the paper if there is a disruption to postal service. An e-edition of the Gazette is available on our website.
