St. Albert RCMP is investigating after a cyclist was struck in a crosswalk on Monday night.

Police say the cyclist was riding in a crosswalk at Inglewood Drive and Bellerose Drive when he was struck by a Dodge pickup. The 26-year-old driver of the truck was making a left turn from Inglewood Town Centre onto Bellerose Drive when he struck the cyclist.

The driver told police that the bright light from the setting sun made it difficult to see the cyclist in the crosswalk. Police are reminding the public to be mindful of the blinding nature of the sun and to be careful while driving during sunset hours.

The cyclist wasn’t wearing a helmet but only suffered minor injuries.

Cst. Beth McIntosh advises the importance of cyclists wearing bike helmets to help minimize head injuries due to road collisions.

No charges have been laid against the cyclist or driver at this time.
