Parkade break-ins: Residents at Mission Hill Grande are still sorting through their belongings, hoping nothing was stolen. The condo complex in the Mission neighbourhood of St. Albert reported several break-ins to its underground parking garage this year. Cars were damaged and broken into. According to video surveillance, a man also broke into several storage units in the parkade on May 12 around 3 a.m.
A St. Albert family lost their home to a fire Friday night.
The family was at home when the fire broke out in the attic of their two-storey house at 11 Stanley Dr. But it was their neighbour who noticed the flames coming out of the roof. Fire crews arrived at the house around 9:45 p.m. and stayed until 2:30 a.m. the next morning.
The family and their pets were unharmed and are now living somewhere else, said fire investigator Les Mroz. But the building, a renovated, older farmhouse, suffered about $200,000 in damage. The cause of the fire was electrical wiring in the attic, he said. No other buildings were damaged.
Firebugs caused havoc in Akinsdale recently, melting a playground slide and setting fences on fire.
The first fire was discovered at Alderwood Park on May 17 at 2 a.m. Someone built a fire under a slide with garbage. The fire melted half of the slide before the fire department put it out.
An hour later, another fire was discovered on a walking path near Akins Drive and Alpine Boulevard. Fences on both sides of the sidewalk were set on fire across from the 7-Eleven store. No one was hurt but two homes located near the fences now have to repair their siding and yard contents.

The first call to police went out on Jan. 21. A resident of the complex said he went to check on a car alarm going off in the parking garage around 3 a.m. He found four people breaking into vehicles. They ran out of the building but the damage was already done. Five vehicles were broken into, three of which had their windows broken.
Another resident discovered that his truck had been damaged on April 23. Someone had “punched out” the driver's side lock of his Ford 350. Nothing was stolen but the damage cost the 65-year-old $500 to repair. The truck was also parked underground.
Another senior resident found her Chevrolet Equinox front passenger window had been smashed sometime between May 9 and 12. Again, nothing was taken from the car, the 85-year-old said. That same day, May 12, storage units were broken into again.
Residents at the complex now hope the community can help them identify two of the men responsible for the crimes. They were caught on camera.
Two men stole $3,000 worth of copper wire from a business in Riel Industrial Park on May 18. The men entered the fenced compound at Rowland Crescent between 1:30 a.m. and 3 a.m. They stole rolls of wire, also called tech cable.
