The Alberta RCMP and Alberta Motor Association are reminding drivers to slow down when passing by the scene of an accident.
The campaign launched on Wednesday with a mock accident scene and the RCMP pulling over vehicles who sped past for a friendly reminder of what to do when spotting flashing lights on the road.
In 2015, the RCMP and the Alberta sheriffs handed out 662 tickets for speeding past emergency vehicles. In the first seven months of 2016, the number has increased, with 400 tickets handed out so far.
About a quarter of all fatal collisions in Alberta involve a driver travelling at unsafe speeds, said Minister of Transportation Brian Mason.
“First responders make your safety their priority, so please make their safety your priority,” said Mason.
When passing an emergency vehicle or tow truck with flashing lights, motorists are required to slow down to a speed of 60 km per hour. Speed fines double.
