A police chase that began in Westlock over the weekend came to a safe conclusion in Morinville.

Around 9:30 a.m. on April 23, Morinville officers got a request from Westlock officers to help with an ATV that had been stolen and implicated in other property crimes.

The suspect abandoned the ATV and tried to flee on a stolen pedal bike, until mechanical problems with the bike forced him to try to escape on foot. After a brief foot chase, he was caught within the town of Morinville.

Jay Evan Carifelle, of no fixed address, has been charged with two counts of break-and-enter, two counts of breaching recognizance, three counts of possession of stolen property, resisting arrest, fleeing police, and driving with no registration or insurance. He is scheduled to appear in Westlock Provincial Court April 27, and Morinville Provincial Court April 28.

St. Albert RCMP have teamed up with Edmonton Police and St. Albert Municipal Enforcement officers to catch speeders.

As part of the monthly traffic-safety focus – speed for April – officers from the various agencies took part in a joint operation April 22 on LeClair Way near Sir Winston Churchill and the exit from Anthony Henday and Ray Gibbon drives.

“Aggressive drivers and speeding drives cause collisions and endanger all of us,” St. Albert Traffic Services Cpl. Tim Gaultois said.

The operation resulted in 35 traffic tickets and one suspended driver being charged under the Criminal Code.

In the past two weeks police have had three reports of break-ins and thefts from mailboxes in three separate apartment or condo buildings in St. Albert.

On April 20, at around 5 a.m., three males entered a building on Poirier Avenue and broke into mailboxes. Suspects are described as about 20 years old.

On April 17, at around 11:30 p.m., an unidentified person went into a condo complex at 20 Grande Drive and broke into mailboxes with a crowbar.

On April 15, around 3:10 a.m., an unidentified male went into the complex at 10 Nevada Place and pried open mailboxes with a crowbar and stole mail from inside. He was captured on video surveillance.

Morinville RCMP are no longer looking for the driver of a vehicle reported to have been involved in the possible discharge of firearms in the Cardiff area on April 14.

Police had said the occupants of a blue Dodge pick-up truck were possibly involved in shooting gophers or ducks in the area, which could have resulted in a careless use of a firearm charge under the Criminal Code, or charges under the Alberta Wildlife Act.
