One person is dead after a two-vehicle motor vehicle collision northeast of Gibbons on Wednesday morning around 10:30 a.m.

A westbound passenger vehicle with four occupants was travelling on Township Road 570 approximately one kilometre west of Range Road 231 in Sturgeon County when it collided with a commercial vehicle that was towing a loaded flat deck trailer. The commercial vehicle was entering the lane from a commercial yard located on the north side of the road.

The passenger vehicle failed in its attempt to brake in time. It struck the side of the commercial vehicle, then made contact with the side of the trailer causing severe damage to the front.

One person was pronounced deceased at the scene. The three other occupants were transported by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the semi was not injured.

Alcohol is not considered to be a factor in the incident. Road conditions at the time were slippery with icy sections, but that is not seen to be the cause upon the RCMP’s initial crash investigation.

“It wasn’t anybody sliding through the intersection that we could see,” explained Morinville RCMP media liaison Cpl. B.D. Tarzwell. “Our traffic analyst was out yesterday morning and they’re continuing the investigation.

He added that the area is not problematic for drivers.

“We never get calls out there. It’s just a quiet little area.”

The identity of the deceased is not being released at this time at the request of the family. Sturgeon County Victim Services is providing assistance to family and friends.

Morinville RCMP along with an RCMP Collision Analyst continue to investigate.
