A public hearing on a rezoning to facilitate a school site in the city's northeast originally scheduled for July 15 has been postponed until after the summer break.
St. Albert Mayor Cathy Heron said during the July 15 meeting the postponement was at the request of land developer Landrex. The public hearing will now take place on Sept. 2 or Sept. 16, Heron said.
Coun. Sheena Hughes said the postponement made sense for the developers and the city to iron out some concerns highlighted in administration's report, namely a lack of servicing and servicing capacity.
"I think the developers in the area are trying to reach an agreement with administration to get the interim servicing agreed upon," Hughes said. "The backgrounder said it was premature because of the [lack of] servicing."
St. Albert Public Schools board chair John Allen summed up the delay in one word: "Good."
Board members were expected to speak at the hearing in support of the rezoning. Allen said the delay gives extra time for important details to be ironed out.
"While city council is off and this division is short-staffed, there wasn't a lot of opportunity for effective review," Allen said. "So for myself, I'm glad they did this so that our support can be tailored to the presentation."
The Gazette reached out to Landrex for comment, but did not get a response by press time
