A man beaten earlier this month as he was walking out of a local bar is still trying to understand why he was attacked.
The young man, who wants to remain anonymous, was helping his sister set up her new home on May 1 and went out after a day of work to the Beer Hunter in St. Albert.
After paying the tab, the young man was walking out with his brother-in-law when he said he was suddenly knocked to the ground.
“We were just about to leave and a guy hit me from behind and then there were a bunch of people jumping on me.”
The young man said the beating was brief and swift, but it left him badly injured.
He said before he knew it he was being tossed outside the bar with the rest of the mob.
He spent an evening waiting in the emergency room of the Sturgeon Community Hospital with a split lip and a black eye. He said he also suffered bruised ribs and his knee has been sore since the attack, causing him to limp. He added the entire time he was waiting in the emergency room blood was flowing from the wound in his lip.
He doesn’t know why the people assaulted him.
“I had never seen these guys before in my life,” he said. “They just kind of jumped on me.”
He said after the beating a young woman walked past and told the attackers they had the wrong guy, so he suspects he was simply the victim of mistaken identity.
He said when his attackers realized their error they all took off, but police stopped several of them.
St. Albert RCMP Const. Janice Schoepp said the investigation is still active and officers are still looking into the incident.
“There have been no charges laid at this time, but it is still under investigation.”
