With Christmas around the corner everybody has sent their wish list to Santa, including the local politicians.

St. Albert MP Michael Cooper, St. Albert MLA Marie Renaud, Spruce Grove- St. Albert MLA Trevor Horne and Barrhead-Morinville-Westlock MLA Glenn van Dijken all said they look forward to continuing to serve their constituents.

Renaud focused on the provincial human services department.

"If I could live in a perfect world, my wish would be that we never lose another child in care and that we just make some incredible shifts so that we are meeting the actual needs of people and keeping our children safe," Renaud said.

Renaud also said she wishes the disability sector was more inclusive so nobody would be waiting for support or care, that the food bank numbers go down and donations go up,

"We are starting to see the positive signs of things getting better slowly but you can still see every day people are hurting and struggling," Renaud said. "I hope that that changes."

Horne had trouble choosing just one wish but was focused on legislation he would like to see pass.

"There is a private member's bill that we did get some people reaching out, talking about workplace bullying and I think that is one that is very important," Horne said.

Van Dijken wishes to see the carbon tax stopped or for the government to hold a referendum on the matter.

"Let's slow down here and try to get our economy stable and get into a position where we have more stability before we tax people even more," van Dijken said.

Van Dijken also wished for a Christmas miracle and asked Santa for a spring election.

Cooper wishes to see changes to the government's spending. He says he would like to see the government reverse the tax increase they have levied on Canadians.

"I would like to see the government return to being fiscally responsible," Cooper said. "I would like to see a government who made balancing the budget a priority."

Cooper also hopes for changes to the Criminal Code and the passage of Wynn's law in the next year.

Looking forward

Next year politicians are looking forward to new legislation and committee work.

Renaud is looking forward to the implementation of the PED safety standards review.

"Those recommendations may be short in terms of work count but they are heavy in terms of activity and action. I'm really looking forward to seeing them transform some of the sector.

Horne is excited to see the continued work on new schools and he says he hopes to get closer to a decision on twinning Ray Gibbon Drive.

Van Dijken is looking forward to both slowing down the government and finding common ground and working with the government on legislation.

"As official opposition our role is to be that voice from the other side, to make sure we are calling on the government to have a sober second thought on everything they will do," van Dijken said.

He said he is also excited to work in committee as the deputy chair of the Standing Committee on Alberta´s Economic Future.

Cooper is looks forward to continuing the work that he started this year on Wynn's law and making changes to the Criminal Code.

He says that although he is not sure if the changes will be made, it doesn't mean "these issues aren't worth fighting for because both need to happen."
