A St. Albert mother hopes city residents will help find her son after he went missing from a Wetaskiwin youth centre earlier this week.
Wetaskiwin RCMP issued an alert Thursday asking for the public’s help to find two missing aboriginal youths. The youths, Cory Blain Andrews, 15, and Tharren Cabry (a.k.a. Tharren Gillespie), 14, were reported missing on Aug. 14 after they failed to return to their group home in Wetaskiwin.
The two youths were at a group activity at the Wetaskiwin Boys and Girls Club at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday night when they apparently decided to leave, said Michelle Gillespie, Cabry’s mother. “He has been missing since.”
Gillespie, who lives in St. Albert, said she was deeply concerned for her son’s safety. “He is 14 years old but he’s severely mentally challenged,” she said, having the mental capacity of a five-year-old.
Cabry requires medication and 24-hour care, Gillespie said, both of which he had received at the group home. “He has absolutely no street smarts whatsoever.”
This is a high-risk situation, said Wetaskiwin RCMP Cst. Shaun Marchand – not because the youths are a risk to the public, but because they could get into trouble. “Andrews could be putting (Cabry) at risk as well as himself.”
Andrews is described as a fair-skinned aboriginal male with short dark hair and brown eyes. He stands five-ft. seven inches and weighs 160 pounds, and was last seen wearing a black hoodie sweater, black Sugi-brand shoes and a black Adidas hat.
Cabry is a slim aboriginal male with short dark hair and brown eyes. He stands five-ft. five inches and weighs 140 pounds. He was last seen wearing a blue T-shirt, black jeans, a Miami Hurricanes ball cap and black high-top shoes. He may be wearing black-rimmed prescription glasses or purple novelty Telus glasses.
The two youths are thought to be in Edmonton and may still be together, Marchand.
Gillespie said she has posted photos of her son on Facebook and around town in hopes of finding him. “We just want him to come home.”
