A J.J. Nearing student has received an award from Alberta’s lieutenant governor in recognition of her kindness and perseverance.

J.J. Nearing Grade 6 student Lauren Krembil was one of nine students to receive the 2025 Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Student Award June 9 at Government House in Edmonton.

Administered by the Alberta School Boards Association, this award recognizes students Grade 6, 9, or 11 who have shown tremendous growth in developing skills to better themselves through determination, initiative, and independence, leading to their improvement and success both academically and personally. It consists of a medal, certificate, and congratulatory letter.

“The accomplishments of these young Albertans are truly inspiring,” Lt.-Gov. Salma Lakhani said in a media release.

“Their leadership, humility and dedication remind us of the extraordinary potential within the next generation — and offer great hope for the future of our province.”

Krembil said she was thrilled when she learned she had won this award.

“Once my parents told me, I was jumping up and down I was so happy about it.”

Friend to everyone

J.J. Nearing counsellor Heather Chyzowski said she nominated Krembil for this award after seeing her growth as a leader and mentor in the last six years. Chyzowski first met Krembil in Grade 1 when she recruited the latter as a leader for her class’s friendship group. Krembil has since demonstrated knack for spotting and befriending students who otherwise might struggle in social situations.

“She’s so compassionate and so kind by nature. She’s got so much empathy for students who struggle.”

Krembil’s mother, Amanda Krembil, said her daughter was “just born happy,” and was known to sing herself to sleep as a baby.

“She wakes up with a smile and goes to sleep smiling and singing.”

Citing her parents and Grade 6 teacher Annette Goode as role models, Krembil said she works hard at school and always tries to bring positivity and kindness to everyone. A dancer and a pianist, she enjoys public speaking and frequently volunteers to speak at school assemblies.

“I like to read in front of people when I have something to read,” she said, adding that she’s not as good at speaking off the cuff.

Krembil said she didn’t have any firm plans for the future beyond moving to Vincent J. Maloney this fall for junior high. Asked if she had any advice for other students, she said, “Just wake up and start the day and end the day with a smile on your face, and do your best and try your best in everything.”

Chyzowski said Krembil was a phenomenal person who well deserved this award.

“I can’t wait to see what she does with her future.”
