Alberta Health Services confirmed a case of hepatitis A in a food handler working at two Edo Japan locations – Manning Town Centre in Edmonton and Tudor Glen South in St. Albert.

Anyone who consumed food from either location between June 13 and 18, 2016 and June 21 and 28 is encouraged to monitor themselves and their family for symptoms until August 17.

Symptoms include tiredness; poor appetite; nausea and vomiting; abdominal pain and fever; followed by dark-coloured urine, light-coloured stools, and yellowing of eyes and skin several days later.

Individuals who develop these symptoms between June 27 to August 17 are advised to contact Health Link at 811 immediately.

Hepatitis A is an infection of the liver caused by a virus. Although typically contracted through direct contact with an infected person, hepatitis A can be transmitted through contaminated food or water.

Illness occurs within 15 to 50 days after exposure – typically within the 28 to 30 day range. Once infected individuals can pass on the disease to others one to two weeks before symptoms become apparent and until at least one week after the onset of the illness.

AHS warned that some people, especially young children, get hepatitis A infection without presenting any symptoms, but that they are still infectious to others. Individuals who have had hepatitis A in the past or who have been properly vaccinated are not at risk of an infection.

There is no treatment for hepatitis A.

It is safe to eat at both locations. They have been cleaned, inspected and approved as safe to operate by AHS Public Health inspectors.
