Man gets jail time for using sword to threaten son
A St. Albert man who levelled a sword at his son’s chest received jail time for the “concerning” offence.
Judge Gord Putnam sentenced William Bradley, 51, to a total of 50 days in custody, 18 months' probation, and a 10-year weapons ban on Aug. 13.
The sentence was by joint submission from Crown prosecutor Ian Ross and duty counsel Gail Gerhart.
Bradley appeared in St. Albert Provincial Court by CCTV from the Edmonton Remand Centre and pleaded guilty to one count of assault with a weapon, one count of failure to comply with a release order, and one count of failure to comply with undertaking conditions.
According to the agreed statement of facts, on Aug. 9, 2021, the St. Albert RCMP were called to a residence after Bradley threatened one of his sons.
Bradley’s two sons were having a verbal argument when Bradley grabbed a sword off the wall and said, “Stop or I’ll chop your head off.”
Court heard Bradley was released on the condition he not attend that specific residence. On Aug. 11, 2021, St. Albert RCMP were called to the residence and observed him walking around.
On July 22, 2022, RCMP were again called to the residence, as Bradley was at the address. Police saw Bradley, who then walked into the house and locked police out. Police forced their way in and found Bradley in a bedroom.
The Crown alleged a criminal record of two previous entries and said jail time was needed as it was “concerning” Bradley held a sword to his son’s chest.
With credit for time served, Bradley will serve 37 days in custody.
