One salon has proven that it’s not about how you start, it’s about how you finish. Voodoo Hair Studio is boasting a story of success after being broken into on Christmas Eve, a few days after its grand opening.
Lauren Baril, co-owner of Voodoo Hair Studio, says she feels the robbery was fate.
“We turned things around and made it a positive,” she says. “It was a crazy situation, but in the end I think everything happens for a reason.”
Since the studio was broken into in 2015 it has had a rapid turn-around in events, with Voodoo hairstylists being featured in Elle Magazine and being chosen for an international hair competition.
Baril was one of them.
She had heard about a program based out of the United Kingdom called Hair: Mastered. Thousands of hair stylists from across the globe apply to take part, but only 200 people are chosen.
Baril participated in an online course for 10 months and then flew out to Croatia where she styled a model’s hair, which was featured in Elle Magazine.
“I didn’t expect this in my career working in St. Albert, obviously we’re not the centre of the fashion world. So for me to get some editorial opportunities is really exciting,” she says.
Their apprentice Kim Turner was also chosen to participate in an international competition called Wella TrendVision.
Baril says Voodoo stylists had bugged Turner into trying out for the competition. Initially she said no, but after Turner dreamt the entire look, she changed her mind.
Following her dream look, she was crowned one of the top five stylists in Canada. This month she will fly to Los Angeles where she will compete onstage against other finalists.
The studio is co-owned by Baril’s sister Danielle Locicero.
