Fuel spill in Erin Ridge

Emergency crews and hazardous material contractors are on scene at Enderby Crescent dealing with a fuel spill of unknown substance and origin.

Emergency crews and hazardous material contractors are on scene at Enderby Crescent dealing with a fuel spill of unknown substance and origin.

Crews have blocked manhole covers and storm drains on the crescent in an effort to keep the unknown fuel out of the sewer system but have also placed booms across the Sturgeon River near the Oakmont pedestrian bridge and behind Hole's Greenhouses & Gardens. The source of the spill is unknown at this time. Bylaw officers are investigating.

Capt. Charles Tye, incident commander with the St. Albert Fire Department, said crews are working with outside hazardous material contractors and public works. A team from Alberta Environment is also en route. The spill stretches approximately 90 metres in length. Tye could not estimate the volume of fuel released.

“We don't really know what it is or where it is coming from,” Tye said.

Tye said there is no danger to any of the homes in the area but crews are trying to keep the neighbourhood isolated. Crews are stopping traffic but are allowing residents to go to their homes.
