Permits for low-hazard or family fireworks have also been suspended, and no new fireworks permits will be issued.

A fire restriction is now in effect across Sturgeon County and the towns of Bon Accord, Legal and Redwater due to rising fire hazard conditions.

As of May 1, no new fire permits will be issued, and all previously issued permits, including those for burn barrels and incinerators, have been suspended until further notice. All current outdoor fires must be fully extinguished, whether they were permitted or not. Officials are reminding residents to "soak it, stir it, and soak it again" until fire pits are cool to the touch.

Permits for low-hazard or family fireworks have also been suspended, and no new fireworks permits will be issued. The use of exploding targets and tracer rounds is prohibited.

Despite the restriction, residents may continue to use backyard fire pits for cooking or warmth, as well as propane-fueled barbecues, heaters, and portable fireplaces. The restriction does not apply to the use of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) or off-highway vehicles (OHVs), though caution is still urged.

Sturgeon County is encouraging the public to exercise extreme care when working or driving in grassy areas. Hot exhaust systems and smouldering debris on vehicles can easily ignite dry grass. Residents are also advised to prepare for wildfire season by keeping their properties FireSmart.
