A fire has engulfed a Sturgeon County business north of St. Albert.

Firefighters were on scene Tuesday afternoon battling flames that destroyed a welding shop and offices operated by Jackson Rentals Ltd., which builds custom timber houses from its property at the intersection of Highway 37 and Highway 44.

“A spark from a welder started the fire,” said business owner Larry Jackson. “With the wind gusting in the shop, in 15 seconds she was out of control.”

Three employees were working at the time, however no one was injured in the fire, he said. Parts of the property continue to smoulder as fire crews from Namao, Calahoo, Morinville, Sturgeon County and Bon Accord worked to snuff out the blaze.

Although the fire has destroyed offices and a welding shop, Jackson said it could have been worse.

“Nobody's hurt, that's the main thing,” he said, adding it's a far easier matter to replace the two structures.

“It's business as usual. I will just have to buy more tools, that's all.
