Emergency financial assistance for Fort McMurray evacuees began on Wednesday. The debit cards are pre-loaded with $1,250 for each eligible adult and $500 for each child to help the evacuees meet immediate, short-term needs.
Each adult will also get $600 from the Canadian Red Cross while each dependent will receive $300.
“I know this has been a stressful time for many Albertans, and while some evacuees have family supports to fall back on, others do not,” said Premier Rachel Notley.
There are various eligibility requirements that must be met. People should visit www.emergency.alberta.ca to learn more.
Evacuees are required to bring their Red Cross registration number, photo identification, and proof of residence (or presence) in the community. One person may apply for her or his entire family with identification that shows family relationships with proof including marriage license, birth certificates, passports, and school documents.
The Edmonton centres are located at the Butterdome (114 Street and 87 Avenue) and at NAIT (11762 106 St.). They will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily until May 19 and 8 a.m. to noon on May 20. Emergency financial assistance will move to Alberta Works offices after that date.
Seniors, individuals with mobility issues, those with special needs, and those who are otherwise unable to apply in person should contact 310-4455 to make alternate arrangements to receive the government support funding.
