Fill the tank today before gas taxes kick in tomorrow

Provincial gas tax and federal carbon tax will both rise on April 1.

The pain at the pump is only going to get worse.

If rising gas prices in recent days weren’t enough to cause unrest among Alberta motorists, tax hikes set to come into effect tomorrow should do the trick.

With both the federal and provincial governments increasing taxes at the pump, drivers can expect to pay almost eight cents more per litre as of April 1.

The provincial government is raising its fuel tax by four cents, bringing that tax to 13 cents per litre.

The federal government's carbon tax is rising by 3.5 cents to more than 17 cents per litre.

Alberta's fuel tax, which was suspended for all of 2023, returned on Jan. 1 at nine cents per litre and will increase to 13 cents per litre tomorrow.

It will remain at that level until at least June 30, when it could be adjusted depending on the price of oil.
