Atlas Growers has become a federally licensed producer of cannabis.
The company runs a medical cannabis facility located in Lac Ste. Anne County, northwest of Edmonton. Jim Hole, owner of Hole’s Greenhouse in St. Albert, is consulting as their director of plant health and cultivation.
On Oct. 15, the federal government officially issued Atlas Growers a cultivation and production licence. That license will allow the facility to produce dried cannabis, cannabis oil, cannabis resin, fresh cannabis, cannabis plants and cannabis seeds.
“It’s a very exciting time for Atlas Growers,” said Sheldon Croome, president and CEO of the company, in a release.
“With recent completion of the facility construction, our dedicated team is looking forward to executing its first cultivation cycle as well as commencing our planned genetics breeding and medical research programs.”
The licencing follows a Sept. 26 announcement from Atlas Growers that it had submitted the last piece of its application, an evidence package, to Health Canada, which it called "a significant achievement." At the time, the company said in a news release that it expected cultivation licences to be granted after cannabis becomes legal on Oct. 17.
The company aims to become a global leader in the cannabis industry.
Atlas Growers will start growing immediately, and is expecting to produce over 5,000 kilograms of cannabis per year.
The company has finished the first phase of its building in Lac Ste. Anne, totalling 38,000 square feet. A second phase will add 350,000 square feet to the building. Once completed, the company will have a total of 1 million square feet to its name.
