An Edmonton man is has been charged with attempted murder after an altercation at a Deer Ridge home on Monday evening.
St. Albert RCMP Cpl. Laurel Kading said police were called to the residence around 10 p.m. on Monday, May 16, because of a disturbance.
When officers arrived, a 46-year-old man was found, bleeding profusely from his arm, outside the house. He told police an acquaintance of his had attacked him with an edged weapon, and he was wounded defending himself.
The police officers who first arrived on scene called for backup, to ensure the safety of the officers and the public. Although the suspect resisted arrest, nobody else was hurt.
“In these kinds of situations, we fall back on the regular training we do – and we’re all about officer and public safety,” Kading said.
The victim was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton where he was treated for a “severe” cut on his arm. He has since been released.
Kading said further details on the type of weapon used were still being investigated, and said she would not offer a more specific description of where the alleged attack took place.
She noted violent crimes of this nature are very rare in St. Albert, and emphasized this alleged attack was not random in nature.
“We want to emphasize these people were known to each other; this was not a random thing at all,” she said. “We’re not concerned this poses a risk to residents of St. Albert.”
She added anyone who may be affected by this incident, whether directly or indirectly, is entitled to contact St. Albert Victim Services for free support at 780-458-4353.
“I think there are probably people up in this area of Deer Ridge, or throughout the community, who are concerned about this,” Kading said. “This touches nerves and could produce some trauma in people.”
Edmonton resident Willie Jay Severight, 46, has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, possession of a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest, and mischief to property.
Severight is scheduled to appear in St. Albert Provincial Court May 30.
