Please join us for lunch on Wednesday, May 12 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Cornerstone Hall as we welcome Dr. Paul Byrne, President of Grant MacEwan University. His presentation is entitled "The Future is Now." We're so proud to have Dr. Byrne in St. Albert and anxious to learn more about the success of this well-respected post-secondary institution.

For the Community Spotlight this month, we will hear more about the activities of the St. Albert 150th anniversary committee and what we can expect in 2011.

Chair's message

For many years, the St. Albert Chamber of Commerce has advocated for more land to be zoned for non-residential or light-industrial development. When the annexation became a reality three years ago, we were confident that city council would ensure the growth of non-residential development by zoning a significant portion of the new lands for business development. Sadly, the decision made by council recently shelved the recommendation of administration to allocate a parcel of land in the northwest section of St. Albert for non-residential growth.

Once again, as has happened throughout the history of our city, we saw the pressure brought to bear by landowners and/or developers to push residential development into the area. This is particularly disappointing because the area was large enough to see St. Albert establish some significant presence of businesses in our city that would not only provide the much-needed non-residential tax dollars, but would also make us competitive in the Capital region. We see big business developments taking place right outside St. Albert in northwest Edmonton but we have no place for them here. The prospects for residential tax relief look bleak unless our city can find another large block of land, readily serviceable, where business can grow, away from the conflict that often exists with residential areas.

Perron District launches new brand

The chamber of commerce downtown committee was formed about 18 months ago and represents businesses located in the Perron District of St. Albert. Work was undertaken several months ago to establish a unique brand (much like Old Strathcona has done) for our downtown, and the Perron District name and logo have emerged. We expect the Perron District will become known throughout the region as a centre for unique shops, great dining experiences, wonderful galleries, the farmers' market, art and sculptures, the Northern Alberta Children's Festival, Rock'n August, the Art Walk and so much more. The logo was based on the unique lampposts located in the Perron District and the name comes from one of the first business owners and a well-respected community member in St. Albert, after whom our main street was named.
