Dogs put their paws down for animal care

The dog has long been considered man’s best friend. As it turns out, dogs are best friends to all animals, especially the ones in greatest need. The only proof required will take place on the weekend at a local dog exercise studio and training facility.

K9 Awareness will be hosting a special fundraiser to benefit the Edmonton Humane Society (EHS). Proprietor Kaytie Stack calls it the ‘Must Love Dogs Jog-a-thon’, a 12-hour treadmill relay that will undoubtedly feature a few wagging tongues and tails but it’s all for a great cause.

“Every couple of months I like to give back by doing a fundraiser for one of the rescue associations,” she explained, adding that even though her business has only been open for six months, this is already its third major charitable event. At the end of January, St. Albert professional photographer Jill Shantz spent a day conducting Valentine’s portrait sessions with dogs and their owners. They also did a smaller Christmas session in November as well with both occasions benefiting the EHS. Stack is a devout animal lover and firmly believes in the services provided by the organization.

“It’s just a phenomenal rescue operation. Dogs are my first love, but we have a cat. It’s great to see the cats in such a homey environment, waiting for adoptions. The facility is awesome.”

Formerly known as the Edmonton Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the EHS was first incorporated as a non-profit animal welfare society 100 years ago. It is a dedicated presence to house and care for homeless and abused companion animals, educating and advocating to the public about these creatures and facilitating their adoptions.

The jog-a-thon will run on Sunday with participants’ owners either booking a spot on the treadmill in advance or just dropping in. Each animal gets 30 minutes before passing off the metaphorical baton to the next pooch in line. Stack said that at least one treadmill will be going non-stop but there is enough space for 64 dogs to have a turn on the dog treadmills (specifically designed for comfort and safety) before heading off to the indoor off-leash area as a reward. Newcomers are welcome as well as regular clients.

“Even if a dog hasn’t had previous experience I can guarantee I’ll get them going so that [they’re] walking comfortably. Sometimes it just takes a little bit longer.”
