The public is being warned not to consume various processed meat products carrying the Casa Italia brand, as well as some others made by Brampton, Ont.-based Zadi Foods.
Other products affected by the recall include: Italissima Boneless Ham Prosciutto, Soppressata Piccante sliced salami, Compliments Milanese Salami, Emma Provolone Cheese, Italfoods Boneless Prosciutto and Longo’s Boneless Prosciutto.
These recalled products have been distributed nationally with some sold to consumers at deli counters, where the original brand and/or best before dates may not have been transferred to consumer packages. Consumers should check with their retailer or supplier to determine if they have the affected product, advised the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA.)
The recalled products may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes but there have been no reported illnesses associated with their consumption, according to a CFIA news release.
Food contaminated with listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but consumption of contaminated food may cause the food-borne illness listeriosis. This can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness, however, infections during pregnancy can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.
Zadi Foods is voluntarily recalling the affected products and the CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
The complete list of recalled items, including dates and lots, is available at www.inspection.gc.ca.
