Looking to build on the success of a previous St. Albert project, developer Genstar successfully appealed to city council Monday for the rezoning of three parts of its Riverside neighbourhood development.
The changes allow for the construction of single family homes on 17 acres of the site and townhouses and park space on another 2.8 acres.
Jonathan Lay, speaking on behalf of Genstar, said the developer is looking to build a housing project similar to The Avions of North Ridge. The Avions is a community of half-duplex units aimed at a younger crowd. The duplexes were completed in 2014 and sold for a price range between $340,000 and $400,000.
“It was extremely successful in delivering affordable housing to first-time homebuyers, to young couples and to single-parent families,” he said. “Following up on that we are looking at doing something very similar.”
Riverside is the first neighbourhood Genstar developed since the construction of North Ridge in 2000. It is located north of Riel Business Park, and connects to Ray Gibbon Drive.
In 2012, the company announced that Riverside would consist of the latest architectural styles such as urban fusion and urban modern housing designs. Approval of the redistricting is said to move development closer to the location of a combined park and school site.
