City taps surplus for better signs

Council decided to use $355,000 of a $435,055 capital project surplus from 2013 to complete the city’s way finding plan.

Council decided to use $355,000 of a $435,055 capital project surplus from 2013 to complete the city’s way finding plan.

“Certainly we hear on an ongoing basis that our signage … is just in need of work,” said mayor Nolan Crouse, who brought the motion forward at council’s standing committee on finance meeting.

In the 2013 budget some money was approved to get the project started. A way finding master plan was developed in 2012 and identified a variety of signs for vehicles, pedestrians and on the trails are needed, as are block markers along St. Albert Trail and gateway signs.

Council was dealing with carry-forward projects from funds set aside in 2013. Some of the funds are for projects that weren’t finished while other carry-forward funds are surplus.

A motion from Coun. Sheena Hughes, on how to use the remaining $80,055 of the capital surplus to lower tax impact, was referred to a future council meeting as more information was needed.

The committee also approved using money from trail urbanization carry-forward funds to complete branding features that were previously considered for the pedestrian bridge on St. Albert Trail.

Crouse also suggested using Riel Park carry-forwards to potentially complete phase five trail work but that motion was voted down by the rest of council.
