The city’s spring census has run into a snag.

According to chief legislative officer Chris Belke, the city needs 70 people to go door knocking in mid-April and administer the municipal census. Currently, the city has less than 50 applications, a situation that has forced organizers to extend the deadline to apply.

“It’s a chance for people to go out, get exercise, meet people in the community, help your city and get paid for it,” said Belke. “If we don’t have the applications we need, we may need to juggle things around to give people bigger routes.”

The 2010 census will be the first where the city utilizes an online survey from April 1 to 16 to help make participating more convenient for residents. Belke said he wasn’t sure how the online numbers would work out for enumerators, but added the job was still necessary for those who don’t fill out the online survey.

The door-to-door census would be conducted after the online survey was closed and extend into May.

Belke said those who are hired for census enumeration will undergo training provided by the city, including how to administer the census and what to do in various situations that a census worker may be exposed.

The current application deadline is March 17. For more information contact 780-459-1500.
