With a new contract between Alberta Health Services and the City of St. Albert for the provision of emergency medical and fire services still being negotiated, council has granted a temporary extension to the existing contract, which is set to expire at the end of the month.

“As an integrated FIRE/EMS service, St. Albert is a party to an agreement under which Alberta Health Services funds ambulance services provided by the City of St. Albert,” Fire Chief Everett Cooke wrote in the council agenda.

“The current contract is set to expire on March 31, 2023, and while both parties are collaboratively working towards a new long-term agreement it was identified that additional time was needed and that an extension to the existing contract would be required.”

On March 21, council heard that the extension ensured that emergency services would continue to operate until a longer-term contract is executed.
